What is engineered hardwood?

Engineered hardwood consists of a plywood or high-density core bonded to a top layer of real hardwood veneer, offering greater dimensional stability than solid hardwood.

Engineered hardwood is a layered flooring product made from a core of plywood or high-density fiberboard topped with a thin layer of real hardwood veneer. The cross-grain construction of the substrate layers resists cupping, crowning, and gaps that occur when wood expands and contracts with humidity and temperature shifts.

Unlike solid hardwood, which is a single thickness of timber, engineered hardwood's multilayer structure locks the veneer and core together. This reduces seasonal movement, making it more stable across the varying humidity conditions common in the Greater Toronto Area, especially in heated homes during winter and humid summers.

The hardwood veneer thickness typically ranges from 1 to 4 millimeters, while the core comprises multiple cross-laid plies. This design allows engineered hardwood to be installed in basements, kitchens, and over radiant heating systems where solid hardwood would not perform reliably. It can be sanded and refinished, though fewer times than solid hardwood due to veneer thickness limits.

Installation methods include floating, glue-down, or nail-down approaches depending on the subfloor and product specifications. Many contractors in the region prefer engineered hardwood for renovation projects where subfloor conditions are less than ideal or climate control is inconsistent.
