What is a skim coat?

A skim coat is a thin application of joint compound (also called drywall mud or spackle) spread across drywall or plaster surfaces to even out irregularities and create a smooth, uniform finish. Unlike taping and mudding at drywall seams, which fills specific joints, skim coating covers an entire wall or ceiling to hide minor imperfections, bumps, or existing damage before painting or finishing.

Skim coating is especially common in whole-home renovations across the GTA, where contractors need to prepare older walls or newly installed drywall for final paint. The process involves applying one or more very thin coats (typically 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick) with a broad knife or trowel, feathering the edges to blend seamlessly with the underlying surface. It requires skill to avoid ridges or thin spots that become visible under paint and primer.

The finish quality matters because paint will highlight any remaining texture or unevenness. A well-executed skim coat gives walls a professional, flat appearance ready for premium paint finishes. In renovation work, skim coating often precedes high-end interior finishes and is standard preparation for feature walls or spaces where paint quality is a priority. Many drywall contractors in the region offer skim coating as part of their finishing service.
