Interior designers plan how a space works and looks, then manage the details needed to get it built or furnished properly. In Markham that ranges from a full main-floor reconfiguration paired with a kitchen or bath renovation, to space planning for a new build, to furniture, finishes, and lighting selection for a room refresh. Many designers here work alongside renovation contractors, either recommending a trusted crew or joining a project a homeowner has already started with their own contractor. We've listed 6 designers serving the area.
Good design work covers more than picking paint colors and furniture. It means accurate measured drawings, a realistic budget broken down by category (finishes, fixtures, labor, furnishings), and a clear plan for how trades will execute the vision. Before hiring, ask to see a portfolio of completed projects similar in scope to yours, not just styled photos. Ask how they handle procurement and whether they mark up materials or charge a flat design fee. Get a written scope of work with milestones, and confirm who is responsible if a contractor's installation doesn't match the drawings.
Our scores weigh how a designer communicates and documents scope, how consistently past clients report projects landing close to the original budget and timeline, and how well their portfolio matches the kind of work you're likely hiring for. If your project involves structural changes, plumbing, or electrical work, pair this page with our ranked guide to renovation contractors in Markham. Our full scoring approach is explained on the methodology page.
