How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Toronto?

A minor refresh (new counters, backsplash, painted cabinets) often lands in the $10,000 to $25,000 range. A mid-range renovation with new cabinets, appliances, and flooring typically runs $30,000 to $60,000. A full gut renovation involving layout changes, structural work, or moving plumbing and electrical can go from $60,000 to well over $100,000 depending on finishes and the size of the space.

How often does a kitchen need to be renovated?

Most kitchens are renovated every 15 to 25 years, depending on how hard the cabinets, counters, and appliances are used and whether the layout still works for the household. Cosmetic updates like painting cabinets or swapping hardware can extend the life of a kitchen without a full renovation.

What should I expect during the renovation process?

Expect an initial design and quote phase, then permitting if structural, electrical, or plumbing work is involved, followed by demolition, rough-in work, and finishing trades (cabinets, counters, tile, paint). A full renovation usually takes 6 to 12 weeks once work starts, though condo buildings with restricted work hours or elevator bookings can stretch that timeline.

How can I judge the quality of a kitchen renovation contractor?

Ask to see photos of completed projects similar in scope to yours, and if possible, talk to a past client about how the contractor handled surprises and stuck to the schedule. Clean, itemized quotes and clear communication about permits and inspections are usually a better sign of quality than the lowest bid.

Kitchen Renovation in Greater Toronto Area

Kitchen renovation covers everything from a cabinet and countertop refresh to a full gut job that moves plumbing and electrical, opens up a wall, and reworks the layout for an island or better sightlines to the living space. In a city full of prewar semis, postwar bungalows, and condo units with tight footprints, the job often means dealing with structural quirks, knob-and-tube wiring, or building management rules for high-rises. Toronto's 57 kitchen renovation businesses range from small design-build teams handling a handful of projects a year to larger firms running multiple crews at once.

What to look for before hiring

Ask for a fixed-scope quote with allowances spelled out for cabinets, counters, and appliances, not just a rough range. Confirm who pulls permits for structural or electrical changes and whether that's included in the price. Check how they handle unexpected issues behind walls, like old wiring or water damage, since that's where budgets usually slip. A contractor who walks the space in person and asks about how you cook and store things, rather than just measuring for cabinets, tends to design a layout that holds up over years of use.
